This piece is mainly made out of small bits of drinking straws. I was sponsored
with 20,000 straws from a straw company and used them all.It was time consuming
obsessive work. By coincidence it took 9 months to complete this piece
- the same period of time that a mother is pregnant for.
My process of making was very intuitive and hands on for this piece. As
I worked, I often thought of the desert. The desert changes its face by
the second as a result of the direction and strength of the wind. My emotions
were like the wind; my changing thoughts altering the shape and compostion
of the work. Wind and mind cannot be seen but they certainly exist and
they reveal their existence using some sort of medium. Each grain of sand
has become the medium for the wind. Each piece of straw was like a grain
of sand and to unite them repeatedly meant to lay out a map of the heart
in my own way. For this reason, it sometimes surfaces in a truly strange
way.
